01.TAPE 1 (upstate)

Written, arranged, produced, mixed, and published by me.
August 16th, 2024

Tape 1 (upstate) is the first of 5 tapes that are written, arranged, produced, mixed, and mastered by me. This album was the result of my first couple of months making music, so I was really trying everything and not worrying about polish. Through this process (while there definitely are some messy moments), I feel that I captured an emotional warmth that I couldn’t replicate now.

The songs feel like memories that are fuzzy around the edges, like trying to remember the little details from a childhood memory. It’s that world, the grey area between how life pans out and the way we remember it, which is where I want all my songs to live in. With no real technical ability, this album was made out of pure instinct for what I at the time thought sounded good. That process of layering mistakes and happy accidents until I achieved something that felt right is something I’m proud of, and while I now would change a lot of things with these songs, I’m glad that they exist in their current form.

While TAPE 1 was a result of many happy accidents, experimentation, and letting ideas grow out of passion, TAPE 2 was my first stap at arranging and mixing with technical intention, not just emotional. This album was made with a desire to achieve a rustic, autumnal kind of music will still staying true to being represented of childhood nostalgia. I also strongly wanted to be able to harness the fuzziness of TAPE 1 in a way that felt very intentionally and less drowned in mud. Making this album made me obsessive over the small details of mixes of not only the songs I make, but also the songs I love and even the songs I don’t.

The songs on here are a blend of instrumental and lyric-driven, with an overarching will to draw the listener in. The lyrics often reflect of balancing emotions between wanting to grow and shape something new, while also wanting to go back to the start and try again. While themes of decision paralysis and worry of regret are present though, there’s always a hidden optimism both in the phrasing of sentences and in the music itself. Like TAPE 1, there are many things I’d go back and change if I could, but ultimately I know that the current state this album exists in is what’s a true reflection of my ability at the time and what I wanted to achieve.
